It’s a wet November afternoon. Fred & Rita are in the library.

Fred: Shaking his head I don’t think you do!

It’s a wet November afternoon. Fred & Rita are in the library.
Rita: Looking out of the window at the rain. I hate this weather!. I wish I were on a beach in Hawaii.
Fred: Shaking his head I don’t think you do!
Rita: Why not? It’s hot there, isn’t it. With lovely beaches?
lanikai
Fred: Oh yeah, there’s all that.
Rita: And palm trees if you need to get out of the sun?
Fred: Plenty of them. You’d have no problem finding shade for your hammock.
Rita: So what’s the problem?
Fred: Looking around theatrically and lowering his voice. Rats!
Rita: With an involuntary shriek. What? Don’t talk rubbish, Fred!
Fred: It’s true! They have a major r-a-t problem.
Rita: So why don’t they do something about it?
Fred: They did try! Back in 1883 farmers brought some mongooses to the islands.
Rita: Mongooses?
Fred: Cute little furry fellows. See here He points to this photo in the National Geographic Magazine:
mongooses240
They eat everything, including rats.
Rita: So what happened?
Fred: Unfortunately there was a problem.
Rita: Don’t tell me! Mongooses don’t like sand? Or maybe they didn’t have any suncream?
Fred: Now you’re being silly. No, the problem was that rats are nocturnal. You don’t see them during the day, do you?
Rita: I try not to see them any time.
Fred: You’re a rattist! Anyway, Mongooses do their hunting during the day.
Rita: So they didn’t see each other much?
Fred: No. Also rats are hard to catch.
Rita: Typical of the horrible creatures. Always making it difficult for everyone. Poor little Mongooses.
Fred: Don’t worry they didn’t go hungry. They just ate everything else. Including lots of rare species.
Rita: And the rats stayed?
Fred: They still hang out on the beaches at night. And the mongooses take over for the day shift.
Rita: With a sigh Cancel my flight to Hawaii. Perhaps the rain isn’t so bad after all
